Teeth Whitening in New Providence
Teeth whitening is one of the most common cosmetic dentistry procedures. Millions of Americans have their teeth whitened every year to remove stains caused by the regular wear and tear, and the natural aging process.
How Teeth Whitening Works
Teeth whitening uses advanced, peroxide-based compounds to bleach teeth and remove surface stains. These professional grade peroxides break down the molecules that are present in exterior tooth stains and bleach them, resulting in a natural, bright and white smile.
We offer both in-office and at-home teeth whitening at New Providence Dentistry. Whether you are interested in the rapid results of a single-appointment whitening, or prefer the at-home comfort of whitening trays, we are here to help.
Teeth Whitening Can Do for You
Teeth whitening can treat just about every kind of exterior surface stain on the tooth. This includes stains caused by:
- Oral tobacco use (smoking cigars and cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snus, etc.)
- Consumption of dark beverages such as tea, coffee and wine
- Eating raspberries, blueberries and other dark fruits
- Yellowing due to the natural aging process
While whitening services can remove surface stains, it cannot treat internal stains. Internal tooth stains can be caused by antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline, or by tooth infections, mercury-amalgam fillings or overexposure to fluoride. An alternative treatment such as porcelain veneers or dental bonding is usually required to treat internal tooth staining.
Benefits of Teeth Whitening
Not sure if you need teeth whitening? Here are some of the biggest benefits of a whitening treatment.
- Greater confidence in your smile – Everyone wants a beautiful, white smile. In just one or two appointments at New Providence Dentistry, you can remove stains caused by tobacco use or aging and get the brighter smile you’ve always wanted.
- A more youthful appearance – Yellowed or stained teeth can make you look older than you are. Teeth whitening helps restore a more youthful appearance, and rejuvenates your face.
- Fast results – In just one appointment, or several at-home treatment sessions, you’ll get a much brighter smile.
- Low cost – Compared to veneers and other cosmetic dentistry services, teeth whitening is very affordable.
Between In-Office and Take-Home Treatments
Both in-office and take-home teeth whitening treatments will provide similar results. The biggest difference is the speed at which your teeth will be whitened.
In-office treatment is a better choice if you want fast results. Your teeth may be whitened up to 5 or more shades in a single appointment, so it’s ideal if you need to prepare for a special occasion like a wedding or another such event.
Take-home whitening, in contrast, usually takes a few weeks to deliver comparable results. Some patients actually prefer this, though, as it means it will not be as obvious that they have whitened their teeth.
What To Expect
From In-Office Whitening
In-office whitening usually takes 1 or 2 appointments at New Providence Dentistry. Your teeth will be cleaned and then Dr. Beth Herko will use oral retractors to separate your lips from your gums and teeth.
She will apply a protectant to your gums, and then paint a powerful peroxide whitening solution onto your teeth, and use a UV light to excite it and enhance its whitening power. Then, the whitener will be rinsed out of your mouth. This process may be repeated several times during your appointment, depending on your desired results.
What To Expect
From Take-Home Whitening
First, you’ll come to our office for a consultation, and Dr. Herko will take impressions of your teeth. She will send these to a dental lab, where a set of custom-fitted whitening trays will be made.
You’ll come back in a few weeks to pick up your trays and your whitening compound. Dr. Herko will also give you a set of instructions for using your take-home kit. Usually, you’ll whiten your teeth for about 1 hour per day over a period of 2-3 weeks. By the end of your treatment, your smile will look bright and beautiful!
Professional and Over-the-Counter Products
Some over-the-counter (OTC) products, like whitening strips, are ADA-approved and are safe to use if you want to whiten your teeth at home. However, there are some take-home whitening kits that are not safe and have very high levels of peroxide (whitener). Using these kits incorrectly can damage your gums and teeth permanently.
In addition, even ADA-approved whitening kits will simply not deliver the same powerful whitening results as a professional, in-office or take-home whitening treatment. For these reasons, it’s always better to choose professional whitening over OTC whitening kits.
Get the Most out of Whitening Treatment
Want to make sure your teeth whitening treatment lasts a long time? There are a few steps you can take. You should stop using tobacco products, as both smoking and oral tobacco products will ruin your smile.
Reducing your intake of beverages like coffee, tea, and wine can also help prevent stains. You should also consider drinking these beverages with a straw, as this will bypass your teeth and prevent staining. Rinsing your mouth after drinking these beverages is also helpful for minimizing stain buildup.
Proper oral hygiene such as regular brushing and flossing also helps keep your smile bright. You can use a peroxide-based whitening toothpaste and mouthwash to help mitigate stain buildup.
